Behind the Lens at Vine to Mind: How Lumina Studio Captured Harvard Data Science Initiative’s UC Davis Symposium

There are event photography jobs, and then there are the ones that remind you why you love this work. Being hired as the Harvard Data Science photographer for the 2026 Vine to Mind Symposium at UC Davis was very much the latter.
For four days in May, the Robert Mondavi Institute at UC Davis became ground zero for a genuinely rare conversation: what happens when centuries-old winemaking tradition collides with cutting-edge data science and artificial intelligence. Vine to Mind is a joint symposium hosted by the Harvard Data Science Initiative, the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science, and the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology, and this year’s theme, exploring how wine, data science and A.I. are shaping the future of the global wine industry, gave us an incredible range of material to capture. We were brought on by the Harvard Data Science Initiative team to document the full experience, and “full” turned out to be the operative word.
A Four-Day Event That Never Sat Still
Our brief covered the entire arc of the symposium, from the opening sessions through the closing days. That meant keynote and panel coverage inside the main sessions, where renowned winemakers, economists, data scientists, and sensory scientists shared the stage to unpack topics ranging from decades of change in wine perception and demand to what the next fifty years might hold. It meant working the room during networking breaks, chasing the candid moments, the genuine laughs, the mid-conversation gestures, that end up meaning more to attendees than another posed handshake photo ever could. And it meant following the event out beyond the main sessions entirely, to the offsite programming that gave the symposium its texture: an evening pre-dinner conversation on the excitements and cautionary tales of A.I. and wine, and the ticketed Judgment of Davis tasting sessions in the Sensory Theater, where the science of the event met its most sensory, human moment.
Shooting a symposium like this across four days means constantly resetting your eye, day after day. A packed keynote hall calls for a completely different rhythm than a quiet courtyard conversation over a glass of wine at dusk. We moved between a tighter lens for stage and panel work and a more intimate setup for the offsite and candid coverage, always trying to stay far enough out of the way that the moment stayed real.
The Range a Harvard Data Science Photographer Needs
What made Vine to Mind such a rewarding shoot wasn’t just the prestige of the names involved, though a keynote from Karen MacNeil alongside voices like Christine Wente and Michael Mondavi certainly raised the stakes. It was the range, and the stamina. Very few events ask a photography team to move fluidly across four days between a data science keynote, a sensory tasting panel, and a relaxed evening courtyard discussion, all while capturing content that needs to work equally well in an academic recap, a corporate marketing deck, and a social media highlight reel.
